International Expansion

We now operate in a global economy, and there is not going back. Whether it be for cost reasons, customer management and support, technology access, growth, etc. we have to work and communicate in a global setting. The Western European market offers some great technologies; the Eastern European market offers a variety of low-cost manufacturing options. The Asian market is booming, offering great technology (Japan and Korea) and low cost manufacturing opportunities (China, India, etc.) abound. Right next door, Mexico, South America and Canada still offer great advantages.

These opportunities can be very rewarding but also very challenging. So how do you decide?

  • Why are you going international? Have a clear plan of what you are looking to do, and why. Without a roadmap, you will never achieve your results.
  • What do you need? Is it technology, cost, regional customer access? Be specific,
  • How much control do you need? Should the operation be your plant, a joint venture, a technology sharing arrangement, a licensing agreement, or a “virtual corporation” with partners who each work in their regions but can project one global image to the customer.
  • If it is to be your plant, have you budgeted for all the costs – including start-up, training and country-specific social costs – that you will incur?
  • How will you integrate the new operation into your financial and operating reporting, and into the communication networks of each of your functional departments?

Our Successes – Associates of JP-MC
We have created a variety of successful international operations, ranging from licensing agreements to stand-alone divisions. We have had CEO and/or General Manager-level responsibility for businesses in Europe and Canada, and licensees in Asia. We have also had responsibility for developing and managing groups of operations in the US, Europe and Canada. Building up JP Industries Inc. and JPE Inc. provided us with the opportunity to create and manage two international corporations engaged in the manufacture and distribution of durable goods. Both of these sets of experiences highlighted the importance and effects of different cultures, regulations, laws and labor unions on the performance of the business.
